WLWI 92.3 FM – Montgomery, Alabama

While working in radio in Montgomery, I had the rare opportunity to sit down with one of the true legends of American soul music, Clarence Carter, during his visit to the River Region.

Recorded during my time at WLWI 92.3 FM, this interview captures Carter reflecting on a career that helped shape Southern soul, R&B, and crossover pop music for generations. Known for timeless hits like “Strokin’,” “Patches,” and “Slip Away,” Carter spoke candidly about his music, his journey, and the lasting connection between his songs and the audiences who grew up with them.

What makes this conversation especially meaningful is its authenticity. Rather than a scripted or promotional exchange, the interview leans into storytelling — the kind of relaxed, artist-driven dialogue that radio does best. It’s a reminder of why local radio still matters: creating moments where legendary voices are preserved not just as hits on a playlist, but as people with stories worth hearing.

This interview remains one of the highlights of my broadcast career — a moment where preparation, respect for the artist, and a strong on-air environment came together to produce something timeless.
